A mother-of-five girls killed her sixth daughter because she was unhappy with the birth of another girl child. The incident took place in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday.

The accused, identified as 35-year-old Kalpana Parmar, gave birth to the girl in November. She was, however, unhappy with her birth as she already had five daughters. On Sunday, she killed her infant daughter by throwing her in a pond. Parmar then informed her husband that the child was missing. The two started searching for the baby but when they couldn’t find her, Parmar filed a police complaint. The police, however, got suspicious because of the contradictory statements given by the accused.

“During her statement we felt that she was hiding something as her facts were contradictory, so we questioned her alone during which she broke down and admitted to the crime,” a police officer said. The investigation also revealed that the woman was not harassed by her husband and he wasn’t even aware that his wife has killed the baby.

On Monday, the body of the girl was removed from the pond. The accused remained in custody as of Monday and was charged with murder.
