A 24-year-old mother said she threw her infant daughter from the third floor of a hospital building in India because she was frustrated with the child's illness and wanted her baby to no longer be in pain. The infant was found lying dead on the ground floor after the woman confessed to the crime.

The accused mother, identified as Farzana, was at a hospital in the western Indian state of Gujarat with her husband and infant when the alleged incident occurred, according to the Times of India.

Since Farzana had to regularly feed her daughter, she was in the hospital ward with the infant while her husband waited outside.

The woman reportedly went to the third-floor gallery at some point and threw her daughter before returning. She then went crying to her husband at around 5 a.m. Monday and said she couldn't find their daughter anywhere, according to Ahmedabad Mirror.

Farzana initially tried to make it look like the child went missing. When the husband looked around and couldn't find the child, he informed the police and reported his baby missing.

Cops arrived at the scene and retrieved surveillance footage, which captured Farzana going toward the third-floor gallery with her daughter in her arms. However, they noticed that she no longer had the child when she returned.

When her husband confronted her, Farzana admitted to throwing their daughter from the third floor.

The deceased infant was soon found lying dead on the ground floor.

Officials said Farzana and her husband got married in December 2021 and became parents to their daughter on Oct. 5, 2022.

Following the child's birth, the baby girl suffered medical complications because she consumed amniotic fluid during her delivery. The child spent 24 days in a hospital after her birth before finally being able to go home.

The parents, however, had to return with their child to the hospital on Dec. 14 because the health issues were back. The child's intestine was protruding out of the body and causing pain.

Farzana said she was fed up with her daughter's prolonged illness and killed her because she could no longer bear to see the baby in pain.

"She has been reeling under immense guilt. She told the cops that she had fed the baby before throwing her from the third floor," a senior police officer said, as quoted by the Times of India. "Farzana said that she could no longer bear to see the child in pain and decided to put her out of pain for good."

"The woman held herself responsible for her child's rare condition and was consumed by more guilt after killing her," the officer added.

The woman was arrested for the infant's murder and for trying to cover it up.
