A 28-year-old man from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to more than two decades in prison over several child exploitation offenses, which included abusing a 3-year-old girl in order to produce child pornography, state prosecutors announced.

David Carbonaro, of Upper Darby, was sentenced Wednesday to 22 years and one month in prison, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Jennifer Arbittier Williams announced in a statement released on the day of the sentencing.

Additionally, District Court Judge Chad Kenney sentenced Carbonaro to lifetime supervised release and ordered him to pay $38,000 in restitution.

Carbonaro pleaded guilty in November 2019 to charges of production, distribution and possession of child pornography that stemmed from his "horrendous" sexual abuse of a minor child who had been under his care when she was a toddler, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

"This is a truly horrifying case. Sexually exploiting and abusing a 3-year-old child is simply too awful for most people to even think about," Williams was quoted as saying in the statement.

According to prosecutors, Carbonaro conducted "photo shoots" of the child — referred to as Minor #1 in court documents — showing the girl in sexualized poses. He also directed his co-defendant, Kayla Parker, to sexually abuse the child for his viewing pleasure.

Parker told authorities in September 2018 that she undressed the young victim and escorted her to a bedroom where Carbonaro was waiting on numerous occasions, local newspaper The Delaware County Daily Times reported. She would then shut the door and leave the two alone, according to an affidavit.

"Parker claimed that she never saw the victim being sexually abused, but explained that she was certain Carbonaro was acting inappropriately with the victim," the affidavit said. "When asked if she had ever reported the abuse to anyone, Parker said that she not."

Authorities learned of the abuse while investigating Carbonaro for distributing child pornography on the internet, the attorney's office said.

A search warrant executed at Carbonaro's residence in Delaware County yielded thousands of images of child pornography in his collection, which included nine images depicting the sexual abuse of Minor #1, according to prosecutors.

Parker, who claimed she never told anyone of her suspicions out of fear of getting into trouble, pleaded guilty to permitting and assisting in the production of child pornography in November 2019, as per the Delaware County Daily Times.

A prior sentencing date had been canceled, and no new date was set.
