Before Prince Charles and Princess Diana agreed to separate, they were encouraged to fix their marriage. However, Camilla Parker Bowles reportedly refused to give the couple a chance to reconcile, which upset Queen Elizabeth.

After learning about Charles’ affair with Camilla, Diana allegedly still hoped they could work things out for the sake of their children, Prince Harry and Prince William. According to a 2017 documentary, the Duchess of Cornwall did everything in her power to make sure the Prince of Wales didn’t fix his marriage.

In the Amazon Prime documentary “Diana: The Woman Inside,” royal protection officer Ken Wharfe revealed “Camilla never went away” in order to give the couple the space they needed to address their issues. The Queen took notice of Camilla’s presence and believed her behavior was unacceptable.

“She couldn’t forgive the Duchess of Cornwall for not giving the Prince and Princess of Wales the chance to save their marriage. She would not condone his adultery, nor forgive Camilla for not leaving Charles alone to allow his marriage to recover,” Wharfe said.

Diana “desperately wanted to make it work” with Charles and even had an argument with Camilla. According to the secretly-recorded tapes for a book by Andrew Morton, the Princess of Wales confronted Camilla about the affair.

Princess Diana told Camilla, “I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.”

However, her rival didn’t appear fazed by the comment “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do you want?” Camilla asked.

“I want my husband,” Diana replied.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana finalized their divorce in 1996. He later married Camilla in 2005.
