Fans may have been shocked when Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in 2016, but the actress gave a lot of thought to the decision before pulling the plug on her marriage.

Jolie began dating Pitt in 2005, at the time, she was a mother of two after adopting Maddox and Zahara. As the couple’s relationship progressed, Pitt adopted the children and legally changed their last names to Jolie-Pitt.

The former couple went on to adopt a son, Pax, and Jolie gave birth to three kids, daughter, Shiloh, and twins, Vivienne and Knox.

Pitt and Jolie married in 2014, but two years later, they split and went through a nasty public divorce. Although the exes are reportedly on better terms since reaching a custody arrangement, Jolie stands by her decision to end her marriage.

In an interview with Vogue, Jolie revealed that her desire to protect her kids influenced her decision to break up with Pitt.

“I separated for the wellbeing of my family. It was the right decision. I continue to focus on their healing.” she told the publication.

“Some have taken advantage of my silence, and the children see lies about themselves in the media, but I remind them that they know their own truth and their own minds. In fact, they are six very brave, very strong young people.”

Although her marriage with Pitt is over, Jolie revealed that she has a close bond with all her children. The 45-year-old revealed that over the years, she has learned a lot from raising her adopted and biological children.

“Each is a beautiful way of becoming family. What is important is to speak with openness about all of it and to share. ‘Adoption’ and ‘orphanage’ are positive words in our home,” she explained.

“With my adopted children, I can’t speak of pregnancy, but I speak with much detail and love about the journey to find them and what it was like to look in their eyes for the first time.”

Jolie went on to reveal that she remains grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow with her kids. “All adopted children come with a beautiful mystery of a world that is meeting yours. When they are from another race and foreign land, that mystery, that gift, is so full,” the actress shared.

“For them, they must never lose touch with where they came from. They have roots that you do not. Honor them. Learn from them. It’s the most amazing journey to share. They are not entering your world, you are entering each other’s worlds.”
