A 15-year-old girl in India killed herself after she was allegedly sexually harassed by her classmate.

The grade 10 student was found hanging from the ceiling of her home in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh Saturday. She was rushed to a local hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Following her death, the cops registered a case based on a complaint filed by the girl's father. According to the complaint, the teen's classmate had sexually harassed her and made obscene remarks at her on Oct. 8, The Times of India reported.

After the incident, the victim had informed the school authorities who assured them to take action against the accused classmate for harassing her. Later that evening, the accused is said to have arrived at the girl’s residence with a gang of 15 and hurled abuses at her.

But it did not end there. The accused reportedly misbehaved with the victim again the following day in school and is also said to have threatened her. Upset over this, the girl returned home Saturday and ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling.

On the basis of the complaint filed by the girl’s father, a case of abetment to suicide, assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty and house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint was registered against 16 people, The Week reported.

A similar incident was reported just a few days ago, where a 14-year-old girl in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh jumped off the roof of an apartment after she was allegedly raped by a man living near her house. When the girl's father couldn't find his daughter in the house, he stepped outside looking for her and found her body in a pool of blood outside the apartment. A case of death under suspicious circumstances was registered and a man named Naresh was taken into custody and charged with raping the girl.
