A stray bullet hit a woman while she was holding her newborn baby at their home in Providence, R.I., on Sunday night.

The unidentified woman was holding her 3-week-old infant in bed when the bullet hit her in the knee after entering her first-floor apartment through the bedroom wall.

"We heard something like boom, like boom, we thought at first, we thought it was like the phone maybe burst, we were charging the phone. But after some seconds or minutes I saw my wife bleeding," Emedi Lotengya, the victim’s husband, told ABC 6.

He rushed his wife to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She was discharged and was recovering at home. The baby wasn’t hurt in the incident.

Lotengya told the television station that the incident has left them confused.

"How, how can this happen? How can this be? And what’s the real reason behind this? Are we really the target? Or is it just happened to… something other people were doing and just… we don’t know. We’re asking ourselves these kinds of questions," he said.

The family is now in double minds about staying at the apartment.

"Should we move? Should we stay? Are we really targeted, targets, or not? Just questions that we don’t know what to do," Lotengya told ABC 6.

Meanwhile, witnesses told WPRI-TV that they called police after they heard multiple shots being fired. They heard four to five gunshots and then saw a man flee the scene in a black car.

Investigation into the case was ongoing and no arrests were made as of Monday.

The incident comes months after a 5-year-old Texas boy, Jordan Allen Jr., died after he was hit by a stray bullet while he was making TikTok videos on the balcony of his home. He was rushed to Texas Children's Hospital where he succumbed to injuries a week later.
