  • DeSantis has been receiving millions in donations from Republican supporters

Donald Trump’s “fraught” relationship with Gov. Ron DeSantis may have gotten worse after the former president allegedly told his confidants that he “hates” the Florida governor, according to a report.

A Trump confidant recently claimed that the former president often voiced his resentment for DeSantis’ failure to give the former president credit for helping him rise to fame.

“Trump fucking hates DeSantis. He just resents his popularity,” the former president's confidant told Vanity Fair’s Gabriel Sherman. “Trump tells people, ‘I made Ron.’”

Before being elected as the governor of Florida, DeSantis, a Republican, had allegedly approached Trump during the 2018 gubernatorial election to ask for his support. “He asked me if I’d endorse him,” Trump said, according to the report.

Before Trump’s endorsement, DeSantis had been trailing behind the state’s agriculture commissioner Adam Putnam. After earning Trump’s support, DeSantis’ score shot up by 12 points ahead of his competition, helping him win the election by nearly 20 points.

DeSantis has since become a fundraising machine, raising $13.979 million in April as part of his preparation for a re-election campaign in 2022. The April donation was the largest amount raised by his political action committee since October 2018, wherein it collected $17.36 million.

The committee in April received two large checks — $2.8 million from the Republican Governors Association and $5 million from Kenneth Griffin, a Chicago hedge-fund manager, according to the Miami Herald.

DeSantis’ campaign finance records covering January to July 2021 showed that many other wealthy Republican donors have invested in his 2022 re-election campaign, according to the report.

In May, the Florida governor received $500,000 from WeatherTech founder David McNeil. In March, he raked in $250,000 from Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot. In February, he secured $250,000 from former Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, according to NBC News.

The donations could further solidify his prospects in 2024, leading some officials to believe that Trump may ask him to run as his vice president.

“Trump surely sees this coming and will ultimately offer Governor DeSantis a joint ticket,” former Trump adviser Sam Nunberg told the Vanity Fair.

It is still unclear whether Trump will run for president in 2024. However, he has teased plans to announce a bid during several interviews, including one with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo in mid-August.

“I love our country. You’re gonna be very happy,” he said.
