Although the hearts of fans continue to break knowing that “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8 will be the last one of the series, cast members Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley seem to be content with the reality that the end is near.

Somerhalder took to Instagram on Monday to share a photo of himself and his The CW co-star. In the photo, the two men stood side-by-side smirking as they looked into the camera. Although it could be the lighting, the stars look a bit teary eyed as if they may be dreading the end of the series and the reality of no longer working together.

“Count down to the end starts now... with these two guys,” Somerhalder wrote. By these two guys, the actor could be referring to the characters that he and Wesley play on the series. Somerhalder is known for his popular character Damon Salvatore who is typically selfish but occasionally cares about others.

Whereas Wesley plays his younger brother Stefan Salvatore who is known for his kindness and compassion. However, since the show has returned from its holiday break, his character has been the complete opposite. Despite their differences throughout the eight seasons, the brothers have always been there for one another.

The photo looks like it was taken on the set of the show’s latest episode, “The Simple Intimacy of the Near Touch.” In the episode, the on-screen brothers return to their hometown to attend the annual Miss Mystic Falls competition so that Stefan can manipulate Damon into confronting the feelings that he claims do not exist.

Although their characters may be at odds on screen, it is clear that there is nothing but positive vibes between the men off screen.
