Girls” Season 6 did not feature Zosia Mamet’s character, Shoshanna, in the finale. As such, fans couldn’t help but wonder why the original cast member wasn’t included in the farewell installment.

While speaking with TV Line, executive producer Jenni Konner said that Shoshanna wasn’t part of Season 6, episode 10 simply because it’s what they felt they needed creatively. The co-showrunner also explained why Mamet’s character was only featured in a few episodes in the entire sixth season. According to her, Shoshanna said something in episode 2 that hinted she didn’t want to spend time with Hannah (Lena Dunham) and the rest of their peers.

“The whole point of the ending for Shosh is that Shosh is on her own and doesn’t want to be with these people, so it wouldn’t really make sense to have her around that much after that. Every season someone is missing somewhere. We’re not a show that says, ‘OK, here are our four characters – what are they all doing?’” she said.

Meanwhile, another storyline that fans missed out on had to do with Shoshanna’s greatest love, Ray (Alex Karpovsky). Despite the fact that they seemed perfect together, Shoshanna ended up with another man in the hit HBO series. Konner said that they intentionally didn’t write a Shoshanna-Ray ending because they don’t believe the two are destined for each other.

Karpovsky also dished on Ray and Shoshanna’s relationship during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The actor said that he knows for sure Ray and Shoshanna had a weird connection. After all, he was assigned as the latter’s crack spirit guide in Season 1.

“I just feel like Ray and Shoshanna have this really weird, particular type of connection, and they’re both oddballs. They both vibrate on this weird outer-space frequency in their own ways, and I think this is sort of the first time that they acknowledge that to one another,” he said.

“Girls” Season 6 aired its series finale episode on Sunday, April 16 at 10 p.m. EST on HBO.
