A newborn was rescued after the baby was found dumped in bushes in South Africa. A passerby alerted the local authorities after finding the newborn in the bush.

Police said the man was walking when he heard a baby cry. After looking for a while, the man found the newborn inside a packet in nearby bushes. The baby is believed to be less than a day old. The incident took place in Phoenix around 7 p.m. on Friday.

"He went to investigate and found a black bin packet in the grass. Inside the packet was a male child, about a day old, wrapped in a pink blanket," KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele told Independent Online.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and assessed the baby before rushing him to a local hospital via ambulance.

"Paramedics arrived along with KZN VIP Security to find a baby boy, approximately a few hours old, under blankets in the bush. The baby was assessed and was in good health," the officer said.

A child abandonment case has been opened. The child remained under observation and his exact condition was not known. The officers were yet to trace the boy’s parents as of Monday and no additional information was available.

The incident comes months after a 7-day-old baby was found abandoned inside a pizza box on a sidewalk in Mexico. Passersby found the abandoned baby wrapped in a blanket and immediately informed the police, who arrived and found a note inside the pizza box that read, "Take care of my grandson. My daughter died while giving birth and I don’t have [a way] to support him and I hope he has a better life and God forgive me." The baby was rushed to the hospital and was reported to be in a stable condition.

In another incident, an infant was rescued after he was found abandoned in a black bag in the parking lot of a church in North Carolina. The infant was hospitalized and was reported to be stable.
