A woman was strangled to death while trying to save her teen granddaughter from being raped. The incident took place in the Indian state of West Bengal on Wednesday.

Police said the 15-year-old unidentified teen was living with her grandmother ever since her parents died a few years ago. On Wednesday night, the 37-year-old accused, who was known to the family, broke into the home and tried to attack the teen. When the 62-year-old grandmother tried to save the girl, she was strangled to death by the accused.

The accused attempted to flee the scene but was caught by the neighbors. He was then taken to the police station. The neighbors told local media that this wasn’t the first time the man had tried to assault the teen. The grandmother used to always lock the door from outside as well in order to protect the teen from the accused.

The incident comes a few days after a man in the Indian state of Telangana raped his daughter and tried to kill his wife when she attempted to protect the girl. The man reached home drunk and took his 12-year-old daughter to an adjoining room where he attempted to rape her. The man’s wife and 14-year-old daughter rushed to the room after hearing the girl’s screams. When the wife tried to save her younger daughter from being raped, the accused attempted to strangulate her to death. The daughter alerted the neighbors, who in turn alerted the police. The man, however, managed to flee the scene. Investigation revealed that the man had assaulted both his daughters several times in the past.
