In a horrific incident, a crocodile attacked and killed a 26-year-old man in Zimbabwe while he was trying to cross a flooded river.

The incident took place last week, and the victim was identified as Nebart Doro, New Zimbabwe reported.

Police said the man was accompanied by his friend Jethiasi Chari. As 29-year-old Chari was crossing the Ruya River, he got swept away by the raging water. This was when he noticed a huge crocodile approached his friend and attacked him, New Zimbabwe reported.

Chari then informed another villager, who alerted the police and filed a complaint. Acting Mashonaland Central province police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo confirmed the incident to the local media. Dhliwayo also said officers have been scouring the area around the river's course to find the victim's body.

“We are looking for the body of Doro who was attacked by a crocodile while trying to cross the flooded Ruya River,” Dhliwayo said, New Zimbabwe reported.

Local police issued a warning for citizens, urging them to avoid crossing the flooded rivers.

“We are warning people during this rain season that floods are inevitable. So people should treat every river as a susceptible home for crocodiles,” Dhliwayo added.

Crocodiles normally live near lakes, rivers, wetlands and even some saltwater regions. According to Oryx The Journal, the likelihood of an attack by a crocodile increases when the water levels in rivers rise, as this makes it easy for them to spread around.

In an incident last month, an 8-year-old boy was mauled to death by a crocodile while the child was swimming in a river in Malaysia. The incident took place in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysia’s Sabah state. The boy was with his friend when the crocodile attacked him and dragged the child underwater. The victim's friend managed to swim to the shore and inform the child's father. A search was conducted and hours later, the body of the victim was found. Rescuers retrieved the body and sent it for autopsy. The victim received severe injuries on his body including his waist, chest and stomach.
