Who will lead the people at Broke Jaw Ranch when Jeremiah (Dayton Callie) dies?

In a sneak peek from this week’s Season 3, episode 6 of “Fear the Walking Dead,” Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) casually asks that question to Jeremiah’s eldest son, Jake (Sam Underwood), while the latter teaches her how to use a rifle. “What happens when your dad goes? Who takes over the ranch?” Alicia asks.

“Most people here are libertarians. They don’t take orders very well,” Jake replies.

When Alicia points out that people at the ranch seemingly have no problem taking orders from Jeremiah, Jake answers: “Well, it’s his land. It will be passed to me and Troy when he dies but people look to whoever they feel worth looking to. It could be anybody. It could be you.”

“You’re father wants it to be you,” Alicia reminds Jake.

The question of who will take over the ranch after Jeremiah passes away seemingly comes up after his youngest son Troy (Daniel Sharman) — along with Madison (Kim Dickens) and his crew — found out in Season 3, episode 5 that Walker (Michael Greyeyes) and his men are coming for the ranch.

In last week’s episode, Troy, Madison and his crew went out of the ranch to find out what happened to the group that was previously tasked to investigate the helicopter crash site. When Troy’s group got to the ranch’s outpost, they found a pile of burning bodies, which unfortunately belonged to the Broke Jaw soldiers they were looking for. About a hundred yards from the bodies, they found Phil (Rocky McMurray), another Broke Jaw ranch resident, sitting and absently reciting the poem “Antigonish” as a crow picked at his brain. As Madison slid a knife into Phil’s brain to put him down, Walker appeared behind them.

Although Troy and Walker have known each other long before, there’s obviously a bad blood between the people at the ranch and Walker’s men. “Tell your people it’s time for justice,” Walker told Troy. “The land you’ve lived on needs to be returned. Abandon the ranch.”

To avenge the deaths of his fellow Broke Jaw soldiers, Troy clearly wants to declare war against Walker and his men. But his brother Jake doesn’t think it’s the right idea. “He killed your people. He was trying to kill you!” Alicia tells Jake in the trailer.

“More people will die,” Jake replies.
