A man in South Africa has lost his life after guzzling down an entire bottle of Jagermeister in two minutes.

Police said he drank a whole bottle of the German liquor as part of a drinking challenge that could have earned him around $12. The incident took place at a liquor store in the Mashamba village in Limpopo province. The store had promised patrons a small cash reward of 200 rands (nearly $12) if they could finish an entire bottle of Jagermeister, which has an alcohol content of 35%, within a specified amount of time, the New York Post reported.

A video of the man, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, finishing the bottle of alcohol in one go was shared on Twitter. Other people were seen crowding around the man and appeared to be encouraging him.

The man immediately collapsed after consuming the alcohol. He was pronounced dead at a hospital nearby.

Police said the man's death was caused by the misuse of alcohol.

"One of them immediately collapsed thereafter and was taken to the local clinic, where he was certified dead," said Brig. Motlafela Mojapelo, a police spokesperson, Sowetan Live reported.

Social media users condemned the man's stunt that cost him his life.

"Worst part of it all… is that, this isn't funny at all… it was a game that turned out all wrong from all directions," one person commented, while another wrote, "The victim paid with his life."

Drinking too much alcohol quickly can have severe consequences and it can also be fatal in some cases. It can affect one's breathing, heart rate, body temperature and gag reflex, according to Mayo Clinic. Alcohol poisoning can also lead to a coma or death.

Around 44 people died of alcohol poisoning because of a COVID-19-related rumor in Iran two years back.

The rumor claimed consumption of alcoholic beverages will protect one from the risk of contracting the coronavirus. As the false information spread, hundreds of patients were hospitalized and 44 others died due to alcohol poisoning in different regions of the country.
