A man was arrested for killing his nine-year-old daughter following a fight with his wife. The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as 35-year-old Jay Karan, was angry after his wife left him earlier this month. On Monday, he called his wife and threatened to kill their daughter if she did not come back. When the woman refused, he killed the girl.

“The woman was not returning home because of her husband’s drinking habits. On Tuesday morning, Jay Karan threatened her that if she didn’t return soon, he would kill their daughter. But the woman, perhaps, didn’t pay heed and Karan actually killed his daughter,” police told local daily the Times of India.

A neighbor said, “There used to be frequent fights between husband and wife. This time, she left his house along with their daughter to stay at her parent’s home. When she did not return despite all efforts of Karan, the latter got his daughter back with to come back. On Monday night, he called her for the last time. In the morning, the girl was taken to hospital where she was declared dead.”

Karan was taken into custody Tuesday, however, there was no information about the charges filed against him.

In a similar incident in Kolkata, the capital city of India’s West Bengal, last month, a man killed his three-and-a-half-month-old daughter during an argument with his wife. Seikh Raju fought with his wife regularly ever since she gave birth to the child. On the day of the incident, he reached home drunk and started fighting with his wife. Raju then noticed the child playing on the bed. He approached the victim, picked her up and threw her to the ground repeatedly. His wife tried to save the girl but was also beaten up.
