What started off as a regular White House tour for a couple from Chicago turned into a presidential-style engagement when the man got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend.

Michael Sayre said he had been dating Jennifer Jafari for more than a year now and was ready to take their relationship to the next level, so he took the leap and popped the question to her last Wednesday with a little help from staff members of the White House, according to UPI.

"Ever since we met, like, everything has just been so easy and straightforward. Just, I found love real fast and I knew she was the person I was looking for," Sayre said as per the outlet.

Sayre initially thought of proposing to Jafri during Christmas time, but he eventually thought the White House would make the perfect setting for a proposal they would never forget, reported ABC 7 Chicago.

"I was planning on proposing to Jennifer over the Christmas holiday and I thought, 'Well, I'm at The White House. Why not see if I can make it work,'" Sayre recalled.

Sayre then got in touch with White House staff members and secretly hatched a plan behind Jafari's back. He also let his 9-year-old twins, Jocelyn and Wesley, in on the secret.

"We were actually keeping the secret the whole entire time. So, it was so hard," Jocelyn said.

Last week, the couple took their trip to Washington, D.C. While they were in the White House's family room, Sayre popped the question.

"He gets down on a knee, and I was just like, 'Oh my gosh, you're doing this? Ok,'" Jafari recalled.

Sayre slipped the ring onto Jafari's finger, and just like that, the two of them were engaged.

The couple believes their union will make their blended family grow together. That is why Sayre felt the White House's family dining room was the right spot for him to propose to Jafari.

"The theme of that room is family, and they just go through and talk about how families are different," Sayre explained. "You have the family you're born into, the family you choose, the family that you make, so I just thought that theme was perfect."

Jafari couldn't be happier with how things turned out. She also shared great things about Sayre, saying, "He's just the best guy I've ever met. Like, he really is."

Jafari's 16-year-old daughter, Candace, also expressed joy following the proposal. "I was happy because I know that my mom is happy," she said.

Though the couple has not yet finalized the date of their big day, their children hope they can see their parents tie the knot at a spring or fall wedding.
