Rice pudding, the old-school dessert that can be consumed both hot and cold and tastes delicious either way, is honored annually on Aug. 9, which marks National Rice Pudding Day.

The snack, which feels like a comforting hug after a long, tiring day, has cooked rice as the base ingredient. The oh-so-yummy treat can be enjoyed as a filling breakfast. It is also an ideal midnight snack. When a nighttime Netflix watcher is hit with a sudden urge for a tasty yet healthy snack, for instance, rice pudding can definitely do the trick and satisfy their craving.

The origin of rice pudding remains unknown to this day, but some believe it came from either China or India. Considering how common the dish is loved and eaten across different cultures, it is really hard to trace where it first came into being.

Every part of the world is said to have its own version of rice pudding. Some like it sweet, while some like the dish savory. There are also versions of it that are thick, while in some regions, a thinner rice pudding is more favored. In the United States, however, people serve it sweet, so Americans think of it as a dessert.

Ingredients

  • Cooked rice
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter
  • Vanilla

Preparation

  1. Take a medium-sized saucepan and add two cups of cooked rice into it
  2. Add in milk, sugar, cinnamon, butter and vanilla, and bring it to a low boil over medium heat
  3. Continue stirring the ingredients on low heat and wait until the sugar dissolves and the concoction starts to thicken
  4. Sprinkle some cinnamon and serve warm or cold as per your preference

This rice pudding has a creamy depth and texture with a subtle sweetness. In case you aren't a fan of cinnamon, you can replace it with some nutmeg powder to enhance the aroma. Some people also love caramel over cinnamon or nutmeg because it brings forth a completely different flavor altogether.

Whichever you prefer to sprinkle it with, rice pudding tastes heavenly and can be made with very easy-to-find ingredients.
