  • Enjoying the success of the Switch, Nintendo revealed that its successor will release in "20XX"
  • Nintendo is expecting the Switch to last longer than the usual console lifespan of five to six years
  • With the end of the 3DS, Nintendo is now producing only the Switch and Switch Lite

Nintendo is working on new hardware, but the release date for the long-rumored successor to the Switch remains up in the air.

Playing coy and seemingly teasing gaming fans, a slide in Nintendo's latest corporate management briefing stated that the “next gaming system” will launch sometime in “20XX,” or before the year 2100. Clearly, any new console from Nintendo will not wait until 2099 to release, but the company may not want to commit to any release date right now, Gamespot noted.

After the Nintendo 3DS was discontinued last week, it marked the end of a 9-year-old handheld console whose last major title was 2019’s “Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth.” Currently, the only Nintendo systems that are in production are the Switch and Switch Lite.

The success of the Switch undoubtedly comes from its combination of being both a home and a portable console. With the 3DS gone, the Switch Lite steps in as the handheld console, and the need for separate formats, at least for Nintendo, doesn’t seem to be necessary anymore.

Still, with the entries of the Microsoft Xbox Series X and Sony PlayStation 5 this November, one cannot help but look at Nintendo and wonder if it will want to enter the battle with a powerful console of its own in a category that it once ruled.

Nintendo and the Switch just set the record for the highest August dollar sales in U.S. console history. Since its release in 2017, the Switch swiftly outsold its disastrous predecessor, the Wii U, in just 10 months, marking an epic comeback for Nintendo.

With consoles usually having a lifespan of five to six years, it’s only natural to start wondering at this point what Nintendo has cooking as a follow-up to such a successful unit as the Switch. However, the company believes that the lifespan of the Switch might be even longer than that.

Meanwhile, Switch users can look forward to the Zelda-related “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity” and “Pikmin 3 Deluxe” to be released before the year ends following the arrival of “Super Mario 3D All-Stars” and “Kirby Fighters 2” just last week.

If and when a Switch successor is announced and mapped out, Nintendo is trying to make sure that it will have huge shoes to fill courtesy of its continuous support for the Switch.
