UPDATE: Apr. 24, 2:45 p.m. EDT -- Have no fear, “Roswell, New Mexico” fans. The CW has officially renewed the show for Season 2.

Original story: “Roswell, New Mexico” Season 1 is coming to an end on Tuesday, but could it end up being a series finale? Fans are hoping it will be renewed for Season 2, and they’ll have answers soon.

The CW has not announced whether “Roswell, New Mexico” is canceled or renewed, but Season 2 news is just around the corner. While many shows were renewed in January, The CW couldn’t give the alien drama a second season because premiered midseason. The network will announce the fate of the show by May 16 when it holds upfronts for advertisers. While there aren’t clear answers, fans can look at ratings to make guesses.

The numbers can be revealing, but this show is firmly on the bubble. In terms of overall viewership, “Roswell, New Mexico” is sixth on the network, ahead of the already-renewed “Legacies” and “Black Lightning,” according to TV Series Finale.

While that’s good news, the all-important 18-49 demographic is actually lower than those shows. “Roswell, Nw Mexico” ranks 10th in the demo. The only renewed CW show with a lower demo is “Dynasty.”

That means that the fate of “Roswell, New Mexico” may be decided by numbers that aren’t made public. The show’s international distribution deals could factor into the decision to renew or cancel. Non-linear views via legitimate avenues, like the CW’s streaming website or on demand, will likely be taken into consideration as well.

Though the first season will hit Netflix on May 1, showrunner Carina Adly MacKenzie stated that those streaming numbers will not be factored into the decision to renew.

While it isn’t clear if a Season 2 is on the way, the cast and crew are already thinking about possible future storylines. Actor Michael Vlamis believes his character, Michael Guerin, will eventually be forced to make a choice. The alien has made it clear that he wants to leave Earth, but Vlamis doesn’t know if the character would actually be able to leave his loved ones behind.

“Could he leave the planet? One thousand percent, but I don’t know if he could leave these people. I don’t know what’s going to happen with Season 2, if we’re gonna get a Season 2 or Season 3, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a moment where he will have to make that decision,” he told Cosmopolitan.

MacKenzie told her Twitter followers that if Season 2 happens, Michael fans can expect the recent death of his mother and the other captive aliens to majorly impact him.

It sounds like there are plenty of plans for Season 2. Fans will have to wait until May 16 to see if the show will get the chance to explore more alien drama.

The “Roswell, New Mexico” Season 1 finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
