“Supergirl” stars Mehcad Brooks and David Harewood teased Tyler Hoechlin’s much anticipated return as Superman with a couple of behind-the-scenes photos from the Season 2 finale of the CW series.

The snapshot shared by Brooks on Instagram shows Hoechlin in his iconic Man of Steel costume as he smiles at the camera alongside Brooks, who is having a good laugh. Harewood is also in the pic with two crew members who seem to be photo-bombing the actors.

Meanwhile, in the photo posted by Harewood on Instagram, Hoechlin — still in his superhero suit — appears to be chatting with Floriana Lima on the show’s DEO set as Chyler Leigh gives a smile to the camera.

Plot details about Superman’s return to National City are being kept under wraps, but executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said that the Man of Steel’s comeback adds excitement to the Season 2 finale.

“I don’t mean to be coy. I don’t want to give too much away,” Kreisberg told E! News when asked what brings Superman back to National City. “[But when he shows up, it’s one of Season 2’s] more jarring, surprising moments. [Laughs] So I don’t want to say too much … but the show is called ‘Supergirl’ and every character there is to service Kara’s story.”

In a separate interview with Comic Book Resources, Kreisberg revealed how important Superman is in the ultimate battle at the end of the season.

“He’s incredibly crucial,” Kreisberg said, before gushing about Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman. “I love Tyler in the part — he’s so good. It’s a bit of a different interpretation of Superman than you’ve seen. In our show, Superman has been [a superhero] for a decade, and he’s pretty comfortable with being Superman. A lot of interpretations are of him getting his start, at the beginning. For us, he’s so comfortable in the role, but the show is called ‘Supergirl,’ so our Superman is here in service of Supergirl. He’s her family. He’s her conscience. He’s her mentor.”

Hoechlin made his debut as Superman in “Supergirl” Season 2 premiere, in which he helped his cousin Kara save Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) from an assassination attempt. He stuck around for Season 2, episode 2, where he fought the classic Superman villain, Metallo (Frederick Schmidt).

Hoechlin’s performance was well-received by viewers. In fact, his guest-starring stint left a lot of fans wondering if there would be a Superman spinoff anytime soon.

Although The CW president Mark Pedowitz was impressed by Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman on “Supergirl,” the network executive told Entertainment Weekly following his panel at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in January that the network has no current plans for a Superman spinoff.

“Tyler did a great job [in playing Superman, but] there’s no plan to do a series,” Pedowitz said at the time.

“Supergirl” Season 2 finale is slated to air on Monday, May 22 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
