True Detective
Ani (Rachel McAdams) went undercover in episode 6 of "True Detective" Season 2. HBO

Just as the investigation in Season 1 of HBO's "True Detective" took a turn in a completely new direction after a phony solution presented itself, Ray (Colin Farrell), Ani (Rachel McAdams) and Paul (Taylor Kitsch) are out to prove that the shootout at the end of episode 4 was not the end of Season 2's story. The trio's investigating the real culprits of the Ben Caspere murder. In "Church in Ruins," that would require some daring undercover work.

Here's how it all went down in episode 6:

The episode began with a tense standoff as Ray confronts Frank (Vince Vaughn) about the news that the name Frank gave him years ago was not his wife's actual rapist. The two have coffee at Frank's kitchen table with both men holding a gun beneath the table. Frank asserts that he did not force Ray to do anything and that maybe it "made [Ray] the man [he] wanted to become." After the two calm down, they decide to help each other. Frank agrees to find the man who steered him wrong about Ray's wife's assailant, and Ray says he will search for Caspere's hard drive so Frank can make his deal.

Afterwards, Ray visits the real rapist in prison and gives him a deadly warning. "If they don't give you life, I will anyway," the former detective tells the criminal.

Meanwhile, Ani goes through her sister to get an invite to the next elite prostitution party. Her sister (Leven Rambin) warns her that if she follows through with the invite, she will find herself faced with either having sex with a man at the party or running away. Ani says she can handle herself.

Elsewhere, Ray goes to a custody hearing where he learns that his ex-wife is requesting a paternity test and that any visits he has with Chad (Tervor Larcom) will be supervised. After an uneasy first supervised visit, Ray goes on a cocaine- and tequila-filled binge before breaking down in the morning and calling his ex-wife to tell her that he will not contest custody if she promises to never tell Chad the truth about his father.

Frank undergoes his search for Irena -- employing some brutal torture on possible informants -- that leads him to a hideout and a confrontation with a group of Mexican drug dealers he had previously refused to do business with. They make a new deal: Frank will let them sell through his club with no commission, and they will let him speak to Irena. Frank talks to the girl on the phone and she says she can identify the cop who gave her Caspere's belongings. However, when a face-to-face is finally arranged, the Mexicans kill Irena before Frank can show her pictures.

Later that night, Ani goes to Chessani's party with Ray and Paul keeping watch outside, ready to back her up. However, once inside, Ani is made to take ecstasy and becomes the desired prize of a particularly sleazy oil man, Mr. Wyman (Brett Rice). When he leads her upstairs where an orgy is developing, she ducks away to the bathroom and finds Vera (Miranda Rae Mayo), the subject of the missing person's case she had been working on. She picks the drugged girl up and tries to lead her out of the house, but Mr. Wyman turns up and tries to stop them. Ani subdues Wyman and one of Chessani's henchmen -- possibly killing them both -- before getting Vera outside to where Paul is waiting. He helps them into the car, and Ray drives away into the night.

That's not all, though. Paul, who broke into the study of the mansion, found a new contract for the high-speed rail line that Osip (Timothy V. Murphy) had drawn up with a new buyer. This could be the break they need in finding out who is responsible for the Caspere murder. Fans will have to wait until next week to see how everything unfolds.
