A video emerged online Thursday morning of a Houston man saving his neighbor’s dog after its leash got caught in an apartment elevator.

The incident unfolded at an apartment building as resident Johnny Mathis, 27, returned home. He parked in the complex’s underground garage and took the elevator to the ground floor where his apartment is located. As he was getting off, a woman was getting on with her pet Pomeranian puppy.

“When she got on, I was looking at the dog, because it was a cute dog,” Mathis told reporters. “I noticed the leash was kinda long but I didn't think it wasn't going to make it on the elevator or anything.”

After the woman got in the elevator, the door reportedly closed faster than expected and left the dog outside the elevator. The leash, however, got trapped in the door and the woman reportedly started screaming for help when she realized what has happening. Mathis responded quickly by grabbing the dog and trying to remove the leash before it could hurt the dog.

Mathis shared security camera footage of the incident on his personal Twitter.

“Instinct just kicked in, I just grabbed that leash,” Mathis said. “There was so much fur, that's why it took me a bit to get that lever off of the collar and when I did, I let go, you could see that leash just shoot off to the top of the elevator.”

The visibly upset dog’s owner quickly returned to the ground floor. Mathis told reporters she was likely new to the apartment complex and unfamiliar with the building’s elevators.
