Wayward Pines
Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) discovered the truth about the town in episode 5 "Wayward Pines" Season 1. Fox

Episode 5 of “Wayward Pines” Season 1 dropped a lot on the Fox mystery’s fans. The revealing episode’s explanation for the enigmatic town was a little hard to believe, especially the news that the year is not 2014, but 4028! The farfetched reveal left fans with a lot of questions. For example, how could Pope (Terence Howard) and Dr. Jenkins/David Pilcher (Toby Jones) have turned up in 2014 if Wayward Pines is stuck in the future?

Pope and Pilcher both appeared outside of Wayward Pines in the present, despite having previously appeared inside Wayward Pines. First, Pilcher was shown meeting with Ethan Burke’s (Matt Dillon) boss at the Secret Service. Then, Pope showed up on the road to pull over Theresa (Shannyn Sossaman) and Ben (Charlie Tahan) and seemingly cause the accident that landed them in Wayward Pines.

TV Line has the scoop from episode 6 to explain the apparent paradox. Evidently, Pope and Pilcher made those appearances before they entered the hibernation state every citizen of Wayward Pines was in before they moved into the strange future town. Viewers will remember that Theresa’s new friend, Wayne Johnson (Scott Michael Campbell), told her that between his car accident and arriving at Wayward Pines, he woke up in a room filled with sedated people – a.k.a. hibernation.

However, that does not quite explain why Ethan and his family had their “accidents” at different times. When Theresa and Ben first showed up in Wayward Pines, it seemed like the powers at be were throwing Ethan a bone to get him to play ball in his new home. Pilcher even made a point of telling Ethan that not everyone has his or her family with him. The hibernation reveal makes it appear that Theresa and Ben joining the town was always a part of the plan. Is there more to the story?

What will episode 6 reveal about what is going on behind the scenes of the secretive town? Fans will have to wait to find out. “Wayward Pines” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
