The identity of Oregon’s Umpqua Community College shooter has not been revealed, but that hasn’t stopped some 4Chan users from trying to spread rumors. The netizens tried to spark hoaxes by created phony Twitter accounts to fool the media, Ryan Broderick, a deputy global news director at BuzzFeed, tweeted Thursday.

“4chan members are setting up fake Twitter accounts to tweet fake #UCCSHooting suspects at reporters and media orgs,” Roderick wrote. The post was quickly shared dozen of times.

There were party hats on the post, which led some people to think the 4Chan users were celebrating the deadly shooting. “r9k is now celebrating the #UCCShooting. They are also floating fake suspects as pranks for media outlets,” Broderick wrote.

But it turned out the hats were in honor of 4Chan’s birthday and had nothing to do with the shooting. “Just an FYI, if you see party hats on 4chan today, it's not because of the shooting. It's the site's birthday,” the news director revealed.

A screenshot of a thread he posted showed 4Chan users making fun of the misunderstanding: “Media visits the site/thinks we are having a party because there are party hats on every post/ thinks we’re celebrating the shooting.”

The true identity of the shooter has not been revealed, but officials confirmed he was 20 years old and was dead at the scene. The most recent news report said the shooter had killed at least 10 people and injured more than 20 at Oregon's Umpqua Community College Thursday, CNN reported.

The people who were killed and wounded were attacked in two rooms in the science building, CNN reported. Two of the students died in transit to the hospital.
