The 2020 Oscar nominations are in, and many fans are upset by the fact that Adam Sandler, who blew people away in last year’s “Uncut Gems,” did not receive any mention. Sandler played a notably dark turn, a bad guy whose own machinations destroy him. While it was a welcome departure, we may be seeing a different kind of “bad” from Sandler in the coming years.

Sandler previously appeared on "The Howard Stern Show," where he lackadaisically campaigned himself for an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal in “Uncut Gems.” The comedic actor jokingly said: “If I don’t get it, I’m going to [expletive] come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay. That’s how I get them.”

That was not, apparently, how he wins.

Entertainment Weekly proposed a few joke options for Sandler’s next “bad on purpose” project, including a sequel to “Jack and Jill” that’s “Just Jill,” “Grown Ups 3: Fart Camp,” and another that's just a remake of his other Netflix film “The Ridiculous 6,” which currently has a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the actor is very self-aware of his reputation for producing critical bombs, his chances of winning an Oscar seemed very high. He is a comedic actor taking a villainous dramatic turn with acclaimed filmmakers that is drawing a lot of attention.

Fans on Twitter are lamenting Sandler’s Oscar snub, saying the comedic actor deserved more award show recognition for his performance. Not only do people feel like Sandler was forgotten, but the lack of any mention whatsoever of the Safdie brothers or the film “Uncut Gems” has Twitter collectively scratching its head.

“Uncut Gems” is not Sandler’s only trip into dramatic territory. He previously was nominated for a Golden Globe for his darkly comedic and dramatic performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch Drunk Love” and also received critical acclaim for “Reign Over Me.”

Whatever Sandler has in store next is unknown, but after not winning an Oscar, it seems he has a promise to uphold. Although he may not have won an Oscar, he won in the eyes of fans who were rooting for him, proving he has serious acting chops. So his next move is up in the air.
