The Witcher Remake
The Witcher is getting remade in Unreal Engine 5 CD Projekt Red

KEY POINTS

  • "The Witcher" is being remade in Unreal Engine 5 for current-gen specs and consoles
  • The game is being made by Polish studio Fool's Theory
  • CD Projekt Red will supervise the creative aspect of the remake

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that a remake of the original "Witcher" game is being developed, promising to breathe new life into one of the studios' defining titles.

This news follows a previous string of announcements where the developers outlined their long-term plans for upcoming games and sequels. In their previous post, the remake was codenamed "Canis Majoris," and it is currently being made in tandem with the Polish studio Fool's Theory.

The "Witcher" remake will make use of Unreal Engine 5 to create stunning, lifelike visuals. CDPR's original version of the game was released in 2007, and it was made using BioWare's proprietary Aurora Engine, which was also used by games like "Neverwinter Nights."

Currently, the remake is in its early development stages. CD Projekt Red is not yet ready to share specific details on how production is going, but it assured fans that "the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail."

"The Witcher" was the first game that the Polish studio ever released. Even then, critics praised the title for its deeply-immersive gameplay that made players think of their choices without always resorting to violence. Soon, the game spawned its two sequels that defined the RPG genre of video games.

The remake is primarily being made by Fool's Theory, which is composed of many developers from the original "Witcher" development team. CDPR head of studio Adam Badowski said that this undertaking "feels just as big, if not bigger" than the first time they released the game in 2007, and they are happy at the fact that Fool's Theory is just as passionate about the remake as they are.

CD Projekt Red will be providing full creative supervision over the project, and Fool's Theory will handle most of the legwork.

The remake is only one of many upcoming CDPR games. In the future, fans can expect a new open-world "Witcher" trilogy, which will start with the codename "Project Polaris" that picks up where "The Witcher 3" left off. This new series is set to be released over a six-year period after the release of "Polaris."

Other projects include a "Cyberpunk 2077" sequel and a new IP.
