Earnings season is in full swing, and about 80 percent of the companies that have already reported topped estimates. Although the solid results have been a relief to the U.S. equity markets, investor sentiment can shift quickly from bullish to bearish if next week's bevy of big firms cannot report satisfactory results.

First-quarter consensus earnings per share, or EPS, growth estimates have been creeping higher from mid-March's low-water mark of 0.5 percent to 2.4 percent, according to a Standard & Poor's report to clients issued on Thursday. In its U.S. Investment Policy Committee Notes report, seven sectors are projected to post year-on-year gains versus the earlier belief that seven would decline.

The greatest improvements in the report's first-quarter forecasts have come from the following sectors: Consumer Staples, Information Technology and Industrials, with Energy, Financials and Health Care emerging from negative territory.
