"Clash of Clans" is so 2013. Supercell unveiled "Boom Beach" worldwide on Android and iOS this month, a new strategy game with better graphics, but the same cartoonish style of its predecessor. Supercell

Supercell, the Finnish mobile game studio and maker of “Clash of Clans,” rolled out a new game for Android this week that retains much of the world’s highest-grossing mobile app. “Boom Beach” is yet another strategy game that ditches the fantastical, barbarian-soaked lands of “Clash of Clans” for WWII-era island-hopping.

Following April’s release of “Clan Wars,” an update to “Clash of Clans” pitting entire teams against each other for head-to-head battles, Supercell’s latest looks more like a sequel than something entirely new. However, the updated graphics and refreshed gameplay make “Boom Beach” a worthy successor to “Clash of Clans.”

At its current pace of growth, Supercell's "Boom Beach" may be the first game to finally unseat "Clash of Clans" from the top spot on both Google Play and the App Store. Supercell

Released for iOS on June 2, “Boom Beach” began its rollout for Android devices in specific countries earlier this week. It was released worldwide a few days later, and is already one of the top 10 highest-grossing apps in both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Supercell, not one to mess with a good thing, has instituted the same free to play, or freemium format for “Boom Beach” as it did with “Clash of Clans.” Players are given their own island, where they must clear away trees and rocks, and build up their gold and lumber reservoirs to take on an army designed to resemble WWII’s Axis powers. The same purple gems from “Clash of Clans” can be used to buy supplies and weapons or speed things along in “Boom Beach.”

Taking full advantage of an era of Android devices with 1080p or better screens, “Boom Beach” offers a more detailed and lush environment than its predecessor. “Boom Beach” has already accumulated more than 10,000 new daily users each day since its release for iPhone and Android. Will the first game to topple “Clash of Clans” be Supercell’s follow-up? Only time will tell.
