Former President Donald Trump found the possibility of being Speaker of the House of Representatives "interesting," following an endorsement from a fellow Republican.

Speaking at a rally in Georgia on Saturday, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., endorsed Trump as a possible replacement to current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"Give us the ability to fire Nancy Pelosi, take back the majority, impeach Joe Biden and I am going to nominate Donald Trump for speaker of the United States House of Representatives,” Gaetz said.

Trump, who shook the Florida lawmaker’s hand before taking over the stage, responded: “Well, that was interesting.”

Gaetz’s recent endorsement echoed a pledge he made in a “Save America” rally in 2021 to nominate Trump as Speaker of the House. The Republican added that he floated the idea to Trump during a conversation. However, he gave no indication of whether the former president was interested in the job.

Talks about Trump being nominated as the Speaker of the House have been circulating in right-wing circles for quite some time now. In November 2021, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said he would love to see Trump replace Pelosi, noting that “people would go crazy” should it happen.

The former president himself has also entertained the idea of becoming the House Speaker. In June 2021, Trump appeared on Wayne Allyn Root’s conservative radio talk show where he said the idea was “very interesting.”

“You know, it’s very interesting. That’s so interesting,” Trump replied. “And people have said, run for the Senate, okay, run for the Senate, but you know what? Your idea might be better,” Trump said, referring to Root’s suggestion of him becoming Speaker of the House.

Despite not being a member of the House, Trump could still technically be elected as the speaker since there is no constitutional requirement that the position should be held by a House member. However, this process has never been done.

It is unclear if Trump is interested in replacing Pelosi. He has been holding rallies where he repeatedly teased plans to run for the presidency again in 2024. However, he has yet to make an official announcement.
