A 22-year-old man has left behind a 77-page note detailing why he killed his own mother and took his own life in Delhi, India.

The chilling suicide note revealed how the young man spent three days with his mother's dead body and sprayed perfume on the corpse in an attempt to mask the foul smell, police said Monday, according to NDTV.

The incident came to light after a neighbor called the house at 7 p.m. Sunday and asked the 22-year-old son, Kshitij, where his mother was. The neighbor reportedly said she and the mother were supposed to go out together.

Kshitij shocked the neighbor by saying his mother, Mithilesh, passed away.

"When the woman asked him the reason behind his mother's death and when she had died, he replied that she had died on Thursday and he would kill himself now," an officer said, as per the Times of India.

The information eventually reached the police, who arrived at the house and broke the balcony. They found two bodies inside the residence.

"We found the man's body lying on the bed in a pool of blood and a highly decomposed body of an old woman in the washroom," the police said, according to the outlet.

The 77-page suicide note revealed details about what Kshitij did from Thursday, after killing his mother, to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The son wrote that he first strangled his mother Thursday and then slit her throat 10 minutes later because he read somewhere that "the soul would not attain salvation if a person was strangled," police said, as per NDTV.

He then performed some rituals that he believed would help his mother achieve salvation.

Kshitij also wrote about the loneliness he experienced growing up and mentioned that his father passed away about a decade ago.

"He mentioned that since his childhood he had been lonely and had no friends," a police officer said, according to the outlet. "He also wrote about his father and the problems he had with him. After his father died, he stated, his mother did not give him money and both he and his mother were suffering from a disease."

Kshitij then talked about his "depression" in the note and said he had no job and could not afford treatment for his mother and himself.

After spending three days with his mother's dead body, Kshitij ended his own life by slitting his throat.

"In the note, Kshitij admitted that he killed his mother on Thursday," a senior officer said, according to a separate NDTV report. "Later, he died by slitting his neck. We sent crime teams and forensic science lab teams to the spot. Legal action has been initiated in the case."
