A woman shot and killed two police officers in Bay St. Louis before pulling the trigger on herself at a motel in Mississippi.

The incident occurred early morning Wednesday when officers from the Bay St. Louis Police Department were responding to a welfare check call at a motel located along a stretch of interstate Highway 90 at around 4:30 a.m. The cops found the woman, identified as 43-year-old Amy Anderson, sitting in a parked SUV with a female minor inside, according to CBS News.

The officers reportedly interacted with Anderson for at least 30 minutes before deciding to call Child Protective Services, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

Moments later, Anderson shot both officers, identified as Branden Estorffe, 23, and Steven Robin, 34, before killing herself. While Robin died at the scene, Estorffe succumbed to his injuries shortly after at the hospital. The bodies of both officers were later transported to the state crime lab for further investigation.

Anderson, who shot herself in the chest, died at the scene. It remained unclear what happened to the minor girl inside the vehicle.

"A tragedy occurred here today in the city of Bay St. Louis as two of our finest officers' lives were taken," Bay St. Louis Police Chief Toby Schwartz said, as reported by WLOX. "We are gathering facts and will ensure a thorough investigation into this matter."

"This is a very sad situation, and our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the families of our lost officers," Bay St. Louis Mayor Mike Favre said, as per the outlet. "We ask that you pray for the City of Bay St. Louis, the Bay St. Louis Police Department and their families and that you keep them in your thoughts in the coming days and weeks during this difficult time."

In a statement on Twitter, Governor Tate Reeves expressed his condolences for the families of the deceased and extended his support for the law enforcement officials.

"Every single day across Mississippi, our law enforcement members place their lives on the line in constant and repeated acts of selfless sacrifice for their communities. They are a key reason that the rest of us are safely and freely able to live our lives. They ARE the thin blue line," Reeves said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was assessing the matter and gathering evidence to find the motive behind the incident.
