National Hug Day is celebrated on June 29 to appreciate the power of hugs while reminding people to give an extra special embrace to someone who has a bad day.

National Hug Holiday Day was established by "Hugs for Health Foundation," which focused primarily on elderly care based on the belief that hugs "nurture the human spirit, promote a more positive outlook and enhance the quality of one’s life."

Although initially created for effective elderly care, National Hug Holiday has eventually turned into a day that aims to promote genuine hugs for anyone in need.

Beyond the warmth you get while holding someone close, scientific studies have shown that hugging gives you more benefits than you think. While hugging someone, the human body releases oxytocin also known as the "cuddle hormone," which is found to help reduce stress, increase happiness and strengthen social bonds.
