KEY POINTS

  • Carrying excess of belly fat is extremely dangerous to health
  • It increases your risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other cancer
  • New technique of injecting icy saline solution directly into fat deposits can shrink them

10% of a person’s total body fat is visceral fat and carrying too much of it is extremely dangerous to health. It is associated with a higher risk of several health conditions including diabetes, insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. Both subcutaneous and visceral fat can be difficult to lose. Certain factors including insulin resistance, weight-loss strategies, and inflammatory responses could be attributed to making fat hard to lose.

The scientists at the Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital have discovered a new technique that involves injecting an icy saline solution directly into fat deposits that can shrink them by 50%.

The new process is all about injecting a sterile solution composed of saline, glycerol and 20-40% small ice particles into the fat deposits in the belly. This will crystallize and kill the fat cells and over the course of a few weeks, the body will flush out the dead cells.

The researchers opine that this method can be used to reduce fat stores in basically any body part at any depth as long as it could be accessed via a catheter or a needle. This process is also free of any adverse effects on other tissues and muscles.

To test this technique, the team of researchers injected the saline solution into pigs and monitored them for about 8 weeks. They noted that the slurry liquid injected reduced the fat thickness by 55%. There was no damage noticed on the skin or muscles or anywhere else in the pigs’ bodies.

This technique is an evolution of a similar one the researchers had previously created. Cryolipolysis or cool sculpting involved running a strange vacuum-like device over the abdomen. It chilled the fat and killed the cells but wasn’t proven to be as effective as this new method.

The research team highlights that their new technique is not only faster but also more effective.

“The appeal of this technique is that it’s easy and convenient to do,” New Atlas quoted the study’s lead author Lilit Garibyan. “With this new technique the doctor can do a simple injection that takes just less than a minute, the patient can go home, and then the fat gradually disappears,” he added.
