Salt consumption may put you at high risk for early death, according to a recent study.

A recently published a study of more than 12,000 Americans by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spanned a total of 15 years. According to the study, men consume an average 4,300 milligrams of sodium a day and women consume 2,900. The American Heart Association recommends nearly half the latter amount, saying Americans should only be consuming 1,500 per day, maximum.

People consuming high levels of sodium are 50 percent more likely to die early, the study found. Consuming a higher ratio of potassium to salt may save your life. Bananas are a potassium-rich food.
