Serena Williams announced on Snapchat that she is pregnant last week. Many wondered why the post was immediately deleted, but now it has been revealed that this was because the tennis player had no intention of sharing this news with the public this soon.

“It was an accident,” Williams said about the Snapchat post, Entertainment Tonight reported. “I was on vacation just taking some time for myself and I have this thing where I’ve been checking my status and taking pictures every week to see how far along I’m going.”

The no. 1 female tennis player of the world explained that she had been saving the baby news. In fact, she didn’t inform most of her pals about it prior to her Snapchat reveal. However, with how far-reaching social media is nowadays, pressing the wrong button can change things in a flash and spill secrets in less than a minute.

Luckily, a number of followers saw Williams’ post, and some were able to get a screenshot of it. Her spokeswoman then released a statement shortly after, confirming the baby news. According to the expectant mom and bride-to-be, it all worked out for the best because she and fiancé Alexis Ohanian had already been waiting for five or six days to share the exciting news.

Since then, Williams has been open about her pregnancy. In fact, on her Instagram, she wrote a sweet message for her bundle of joy. “My Dearest Baby, You gave me the strength I didn’t know I had. You taught me the true meaning of serenity and peace. I can't wait to meet you,” she wrote.

In another Instagram post, she also defended herself from Ilie Nastase’s remarks towards her unborn child which she considered to be “racist.” She thanked the ITF for looking into it and promised to cooperate.

As for her victory in the Australian Open last January, Williams admitted that she only found out that she was pregnant a few days before the tournament. She didn’t know what to think at the time, so she chose to focus on winning the match because that was what was expected from her. Losing the competition would have been much bigger news.
