An El Paso police officer shot and mortally wounded a pit bull after the dog bit at least two people in Texas.

The incident took place about 1 p.m. Sunday when the cops received several 911 calls regarding two pit bulls that had attacked multiple people in Tierra Limon Drive, KTSM reported. While no patrol units were able to respond to the 911 calls initially, an officer became available at around 2 p.m. and reached the scene.

The officer was forced to fire a shot at one of the dogs as it was being aggressive toward residents, according to officials. Both dogs were seized by Animal Control officers who were also called to the scene.

The wounded dog was later taken to a hospital and is not expected to survive. The second dog was not injured in the incident, according to KVIA.

The two people who were bitten by the pit bulls went to the hospital on their own and received treatment for minor injuries. The identity of the victims was not released by authorities.

The incident remains under investigation in accordance with the standard procedure relating to officer-involved shootings, a police media statement noted.

The El Paso Police Department has a designated program that trains officers on dog behavior with the aim of improving officer safety and preventing unwarranted shootings.

This incident came days after El Paso officers shot two dogs that attacked two men and bit one of them while they were doing construction work Friday on Cypress Avenue. One of the dogs died at the scene, and the second was euthanized later, as per El Paso Times.

When police arrived at the scene, they saw the canines running loose on the street and "attempted to coax the dogs with treats to no avail," the El Paso Police Department said in a statement. The dogs also attacked the officers and even bit one of them while they were attempting to hold them down with a baton and a stun gun before the shooting took place.
