  • Findling had once said Trump was "racist, cruel, sick, unforgivable and un-American"
  • He is also a supporter of abortion rights
  • He brings decades of trial experience, ranging from high-profile murder cases to local political corruption

Former President Donald Trump has hired a renowned Atlanta lawyer, who once called him a "racist architect," to represent him in the ongoing criminal probe into potential interference in the 2020 election in Georgia.

Drew Findling, famously known as the "Billion Dollar Lawyer," is a well-known criminal defense attorney in Georgia and brings years of trial experience, including high-profile murder cases and small-town political corruption scandals. He has represented several rap artists, including Cardi B, Gucci Mane and Migos. His appointment highlights the gravity of the inquiry, as well as the potential legal consequences for Trump, the New York Times reported.

A "politically diverse group of attorneys with varied opinions" were "handpicked on behalf of the president" to represent him in the lawsuit, co-counsel Jennifer Little told Business Insider, adding, "As a team, we look forward to vehemently defending our client and the Constitution."

Findling said the case against Trump was a politically driven persecution.

"I am a passionate advocate against injustice and will not deny that; however, where I see a misuse and abuse of power I feel compelled to act," he said. "I may differ politically from many of my clients, but that doesn't change my commitment to defend against wrongful investigations."

Interestingly, Trump has chosen someone who had been critical of him in the past to represent a case, which could be the most pressing legal challenge against the former president. Findling had earlier said Trump's public and social media statements were "racist, cruel, sick, unforgivable, and un-American!" He also criticized Trump and called for his impeachment after he fired then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn in 2017, reported Raw Story.

The lawyer also lashed out at Trump for criticizing NBA star Lebron James in 2018.

He is also a supporter of abortion rights in the U.S. In an Instagram post in June, which came two days after the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion, Findling said his firm is dedicated to "fighting to restore a woman's right to choose." He also promised free legal representation for anyone accused of violating Georgia's stringent abortion laws, Associated Press reported.

"The presence of this high-priced and high-powered legal talent signifies the exceptional national importance of the fast-moving investigation and the likely imminent charges against the former president and possibly others in his circle," said Norman Eisen, former special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during the first Trump impeachment.

Trump is currently facing a number of investigations, including financial misconduct, the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and alleged attempts to rig the 2020 election. The FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida on Monday as part of a probe into his handling of sensitive materials.
