A 45-year-old woman pushing her grandchild on a stroller down the sidewalk in Tallahassee, Florida, was hit and killed by a car Monday night.

Officer Kevin Bradshaw, a spokesman for the Tallahassee Police Department, said a vehicle was westbound on Tennessee Street near the corner of Dixie Drive when it swerved to avoid what the driver believed to be an imminent crash around 8 p.m. local time ( 9 p.m EDT) Monday.

It is not known if the driver was charged.

"Their vehicle left the roadway and struck a 45-year-old woman who was pushing a stroller with a young child in it," Bradshaw said. "Both the woman and the stroller had been on the sidewalk when the collision occurred."

The grandmother, whose name was not released, died at the scene. The child was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The age of the child was not known.

"There are elements of this case that are still under active investigation, and there is no more information to release at this time," Bradshaw said in a news release.

A portion of Tennessee Street was shut down through the evening as traffic homicide investigators worked at the scene.

"I thought a motorcycle was pulling up to the front door — that's how loud it was," an unidentified witness said. "I went outside to see if everyone was OK. But I stopped when I saw her body a couple of feet in front of me."

The witness added that crashes were common at Tennessee Street and Dixie Drive, as there were no traffic signals.

Tallahassee Police Department urged anyone with information regarding the incident to call 850-891-4200 to speak with the Traffic Homicide Unit. Witnesses can also provide anonymous information by calling Crime Stoppers at 850-574-TIPS.
