A woman fatally stabbed her boyfriend in an altercation that unfolded in a stairwell of a New York apartment complex, the New York Daily News has reported.

John "Biggie" Levestone, 37, arrived at the Bronx residence he shared with his girlfriend, Crystal Fryson, 34, at around 10:30 p.m. on April 22 when the incident took place.

Levestone knocked on the front door of the Highbridge Gardens Houses apartment, but Fryson refused to open the door. A heated argument ensued afterward.

Fryson yelled at the man from inside the apartment and cursed at him for nearly a minute.

"I'll dig your damn f---ing grave!" Fryson yelled, as per the outlet.

"Open the door now," Levestone reportedly begged.

Fryson's young children witnessed the heated argument.

"He was shouting and screaming at her. She kept shouting back from inside the apartment, 'I don't want to talk to you, you piece of s---,'" a neighbor named Justin Sanchez told the outlet.

The boyfriend eventually gave up and walked slowly down the hall into the stairwell, where he would sleep on nights Fryson wouldn't let him inside the apartment.

"Now his broke a-- is running," Fryson was reportedly heard saying in a ring doorbell video.

Fryson followed him with two other women into the apartment building's hallway stairway.

"He stopped hollering and went into the stairwell and she came out screaming," Sanchez added. "The real fighting happened in the stairwell. They just kept yelling in the stairwell but I don't know what happened after that. I just heard children start screaming and crying."

The two other women panicked and ran back into the apartment before Fryson stabbed her boyfriend in the torso.

"I'm going to jail," she reportedly muttered to herself multiple times while emerging from the stairwell, as per a video accessed by the New York Daily News.

One of the woman's younger kids reportedly said, "No, mom, it's self-defense. It's self-defense, it's self-defense!"

Levestone was taken to the hospital but did not survive, PIX11 reported, citing the New York Police Department.

An unidentified neighbor told the New York Daily News that there was "an ongoing-abuse type situation" going on between the couple.

"She was the couldn't-be-bothered type and he was a take-me-back type," neighbor Rain Moore told the outlet. "She would hang out with him if he had a few dollars in his pocket and if he didn't he slept in the hall."

Neighbors reportedly said Fryson mistreated the victim even though he tried to please her and provide money for her children.

"He was a great stepdad, treated those kids like his own. He was a family man," a longtime friend identified by the nickname Sassy said, according to the outlet.

Fryson was arrested Sunday and charged with murder, manslaughter and weapon possession.
