1. Okami

Developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom, under the direction of Hideki Kamiya, "Okami" — meaning “great god” in Japanese — allows you to play as the sun goddess Amaterasu. The deity takes the form of a fox with red markings, with a weapon mounted on her back. The player controls Amaterasu as she adventures around Nippon (Japan), searching for the celestial brush techniques that players use to restore and save Nippon. Amaterasu is joined and guided by the diminutive warrior Issun, a self-proclaimed "wandering artist."

The multi-awarded game is based heavily on Japanese folklore, with a stunning art style that resembles Japanese ink wash paintings (sumi-e). It features a mix of adventure, platform and puzzle genres, with a semi-open world setting. Combat takes place within contained zones, where Amaterasu can use a combination of weapons and brush techniques to defeat demon enemies. While the main plot is linear, there are several side quests available, with rewards that boost your power in-game. The Switch port functions wonderfully, with the touchscreen particularly useful for the celestial brush techniques.

2. Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection

Offering two games in one — "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag" and "Assassin's Creed: Rogue" — Ubisoft takes one of the iconic franchise’s most highly-rated games (as per IGN) and ports it surprisingly well to the Switch. "Black Flag" deviates from the Assassin’s Creed standard by taking the player to the 18th century Caribbean, during the so-called Golden Age of piracy. When sent back through the Animus, you play as Edward Kenway, father of AC antagonist Haytham Kenway, who walks into the conflict between the Templars and the Assassins. In present-day, you play as an Abstergo agent hacking into Abstergo to discover its secrets.

With, again, an open-world environment, and a combination of action/adventure and stealth, "Black Flag" is an excellent addition to the long-running franchise. Players have less restrictions while exploring, able to interact with the environment and different NPCs outside the main story. "Rogue," meanwhile, puts a twist into the traditional formula by allowing you to play as a Templar, showing the other side of the hostilities.

Katamari Damacy REROLL Bandai Namco Entertainment

3. Katamari Damacy REROLL

Developed and published by Namco, this is a Switch version of the whimsical, lighthearted game "Katamari Damacy." With upgraded graphics and controls unique to the Switch, this game retains all the important parts of this quirky, puzzle-action game. When the King of All Cosmos accidentally destroys all the stars in the sky — again — the determined and tenacious prince must roll up increasingly large objects to create new celestial bodies to shine.

"REROLL" keeps all the familiar aspects of the Katamari series — the humor, the catchy and wacky soundtrack, the nostalgic animation. The use of the joycons with the addition of the gyro controls brings a different challenge to collecting the objects to get your star to its required size. "Katamari" remains a genre unto itself, allowing you to have some casual and carefree fun as you roll up the world to restore the galaxies.

4. Hades

Welcome to the game at the top of the current Switch trends. Released just this September, "Hades" is the latest of Supergiant Games’ releases. It’s a "roguelike" game — meaning you crunch through a series of levels in one go, where death sends you right back to the start. In the game, you play Zagreus, a son of Hades, attempting to escape the underworld. There are power-ups and other abilities available to help you on your way — plus mythical weapons, Boons from Olympic gods, and a fantastic cast of characters you meet as you progress.

While slightly scaled down from its 4K PC counterpart, the visuals of "Hades" on the Switch remain stunning, full of vivid color and gorgeous detail. Each isometric-view level is slightly different every time, offering plenty of replayability. The soundtrack gets you pumped, and the characters are well-voiced and developed. Join the hype and defy the God of Death — and then go back and start all over again.
