Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday ‏took to Twitter to slam right-wing media sites, specifically The Daily Caller, for publishing “fake nude photo” of her.

Some sites claimed that a photo of a woman’s legs in a bathtub with a weed vape that was circulated on Reddit was that of the congresswoman.

“For those out of the loop, Republicans began to circulate a fake nude photo of me,” she wrote on Twitter, adding this was a “Completely disgusting behavior from Conservative outlets.”

The most notable site to circulate the image was The Daily Caller, which also went on to tweet out an article on the photo, not once but twice. The tweet has since been deleted.

The Democratic socialist hit out at the website stating, “The Daily Caller reposted it (!) and refused to indicate it was fake in the title as well.”

Sydney Leathers, the real woman depicted in the photo, issued an apology stating, “I have to say, of all the politicians in America, she’s probably the last one I’d want to get into trouble … So I’m deeply sorry to her that Internet misogynists used an old photo of mine to try and target her.”

Calling her a national treasure, the adult film actress added, “I’m sorry creeps are trying to pretend my pics are actually pics of you. Happy to clear that up & tbh I’d take the blame for things I haven’t actually done just to protect your honor, you’re a national treasure.”

“Next time someone wants to use one of my photos to harm a politician can we at least make sure it’s a conservative,” Leathers said, the New York Post reported.

This is not the first time that Ocasio-Cortez was targeted by GOP activists.

In November 2018, a conservative reporter tweeted out a picture of her, trying to criticize her outfit. Though the congresswoman has always been vocal about her financial situation, the reporter said by looking at her outfit it didn’t seem like she had lack of money.

Eddie Scarry, the reporter, tweeted, “Hill staffer sent me this pic of Ocasio-Cortez they took just now. I’ll tell you something: that jacket and coat don’t look like a girl who struggles.”

The tweet received a lot of backlash following which Scarry deleted the photo and stated, “I posted a tweet earlier suggesting the incoming congresswoman looked well put together -- ELEGANT even -- despite suggestions she’s struggled. The tweet was taken as something else, so I’ve deleted it!”

Ocasio-Cortez too hit back at the reporter by saying, “Oh, does Scarry think he can delete his misogyny without an apology? I don’t think so. You’re a journalist - readers should know your bias. If I walked into Congress wearing a sack, they would laugh & take a picture of my backside. If I walk in with my best sale-rack clothes, they laugh & take a picture of my backside. Dark hates light – that’s why you tune it out. Shine bright & keep it pushing.”
