A 12-year-old boy was injured as he tried to protect his mother as she was being stabbed by her husband with a knife in Enid, Oklahoma.

The accused, James Allen Schmitt, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and child abuse for the incident.

The Enid Police Department arrived at the scene after receiving a call about a woman being stabbed Monday just after 6 p.m., according to the Kansas City Star.

Witnesses told cops that Schmitt stabbed his 32-year-old wife with a serrated knife and a screwdriver. Cops found both these items covered in blood inside the house.

Officers said witnesses heard the couple arguing and yelling over a pair of fake AirPods. Schmitt then went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and reportedly stabbed his wife five times.

"Oh my God! I really did it this time!" Schmitt yelled, according to witness accounts.

The victim's 12-year-old son tried to defend his mother during the attack. Schmitt used his fist and struck the boy, who had red marks on the left side of his face and chest when officers found him.

In the 911 call that the victim's mother made to report the incident, the audio captured the caller saying the victim was trying to smoke a cigarette to calm herself down. The woman was asked by dispatchers to stop and apply pressure to her wounds until help arrived.

First responders at the scene found the woman wearing bloodied clothes. Police said she had blood on her hands and was "holding a towel to the right side of her neck."

The woman was taken to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City in a helicopter. She was released after receiving medical treatment, police said.

Schmitt had escaped from the scene in a silver 2012 Nissan Rogue before officials arrived, Enid News & Eagle reported.

Detectives "obtained a warrant for Schmitt's arrest on complaints of assault with a dangerous weapon and child abuse," the police department wrote on Facebook. "At 2:44 a.m. Tuesday Aug. 23, 2022, another call was received from 707 N. 12th reporting Schmitt had returned to the residence and was seen driving south from the area in the silver Nissan."

Schmitt was eventually tracked down and pulled over after "Officer Robert Fleer saw the Nissan," police added.

He was arrested for the stabbing without incident.
