A man kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico found and rescued a dog swimming in the water after its owner was killed in a car accident, The Associated Press reported.

Florida Highway Patrol told The AP the injured canine had escaped into the water after his owner, 53-year-old Donna Chen, was hit and killed by a drunk driver on the Siesta Key Saturday afternoon.

Barney, a Hungarian Viszla, was identified by microchip. The kayaker, Rory O'Conner of Bellingham, Washington, brought the dog to a vet, where it is recovering.
