Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles had a hard time winning Queen Elizabeth II’s favor.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall had a rough start when they decided to rekindle their romance while he was still married to Princess Diana. The late Princess of Wales said that her relationship with Prince Charles didn’t work because “there were three of us in this marriage,” implying that she was aware of the future king’s illicit affair with Camilla.

The public hated Prince Charles and Camilla, and things worsened following Princess Diana’s accident. The couple didn’t have the majority’s sympathy including Queen Elizabeth II’s.

According to Tom Bower in his book “Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles,” a year after Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom died, Prince Charles asked the Queen to “soften her antagonism” toward Camilla for them to be able to finally publicize their romance. The heir was also hoping about the possibility of welcoming Camilla to the royal fold.

The monarch had several martinis when Prince Charles approached her. Her Majesty reportedly replied forcefully, “I want nothing to do with her.”

Queen Elizabeth was angry that Prince Charles lied to her about his affair with Camilla. The monarch didn’t like Camilla. In fact, she referred to her as a “wicked woman.”

Bower also revealed in the same publication that Queen Elizabeth couldn’t forgive Camilla for not giving Prince Charles and Princess Diana a chance to recover their marriage.

In the 2017 Amazon Prime documentary “Diana: The Woman Inside,” Ken Wharfe, a former royal protection officer, shared the Queen’s sentiments. According to him, Princess Diana didn’t want a divorce. In fact, she was desperate to make her marriage with Prince Charles work for the sake of their two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Unfortunately, Camilla didn’t leave Prince Charles alone to mend his broken marriage. As Wharfe puts it, “Camilla never went away.”

It’s been over two decades since Princess Diana’s death and the public including Queen Elizabeth II have already warmed up to Camilla. On Prince Charles’ 70th birthday party, Her Majesty recognized Camilla. Queen Elizabeth mentioned how Camilla sustained Prince Charles to be a man who is passionate and creative.

The public also recognized Prince Charles and Camilla’s enduring love. Even Princess Diana’s fans started to see the duchess in a new light and they supported her to be the next queen consort.
